Importance of the sea

Blue Ocean Institute

From Arctic Alaskan fishing villages to Zanzibar’s shores, the staff of Blue Ocean Institute studies and articulates how the ocean is changing and how everything humans do—both on land and at sea—affects the waters, wildlife, and people of our world. But gloomy environmental warnings and predictions don’t move people to make changes that can help our shared ocean.

NRDC

The Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC) was founded in 1970 by a group of law students and attorneys at the forefront of the environmental movement. NRDC lawyers helped write some of America’s bedrock environmental laws. NRDC works to solve the most pressing environmental issues we face today: curbing global warming and creating the clean energy future, reviving the world’s oceans, defending endangered wildlife and wild places, protecting our health by preventing pollution, ensuring safe and sufficient water, and fostering sustainable communities.

Save Our Seas Foundation

We transform knowledge into action by shining a spotlight on workable, science-based solutions to the most serious threats facing the ocean, such as climate change, pollution and depletion of marine life. We work collaboratively with targeted sectors to encourage market solutions, policies and behaviors that result in a healthy, thriving ocean. By informing and empowering diverse ocean voices and conservation champions, SeaWeb is creating a culture of ocean conservation.

The International Polar Foundation

The International Polar Foundation communicates and educates on polar science and polar research as a way to understand key environmental and climate mechanisms.
The IPF also promotes innovative and multifaceted responses to the complex challenges raised by the need for action on sustainable development.

Fisheries and aquaculture

Environmental Justice Foundation

For millions of people around the world, a degraded natural environment means hunger and brutal poverty that costs lives. By providing film and advocacy training to partners in the global south the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) protects the natural environment and the people and wildlife that depend upon it by empowering local communities to investigate, expose and peacefully resolve abuses. EJF campaigns internationally on the issues our grassroots partners work locally to solve including cotton production, pirate fishing, shrimp farming, pesticides, wildlife and climate refugees.

Fishsubsidy.org

Subsidies paid to owners of fishing vessels and others working in the fishing industry under the European Union’s Common Fisheries Policy amount to more than €1 billion a year. Fishsubsidy.org helps people find out who gets what, and why.

SOFIA

The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture (SOFIA) is the flagship publication of the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department. This premier advocacy document is published every two years to provide policy-makers, civil society and those whose livelihoods depend on the sector a comprehensive, objective and global view of capture fisheries and aquaculture, including associated policy issues.

Seas At Risk

Seas At Risk is a democratic international network which uses its unique membership base and long-standing expertise to advocate environmentally sound policies at European and international level. Seas At Risk aims at the protection and restoration of the marine environment, and specifically the waters of the North East Atlantic including the North and Irish Seas. While the work of Seas At Risk reaches into every corner of concern about the marine environment, and while we regularly work on a multitude of different marine environmental issues, there are some basic principles that transcend individual issues and guide the direction of our work.

Plastic Soup Foundation

Eurogroup for Animals

Sea Shepherd

Health

EDF Seafood Selector

Fish is generally healthy to eat, but you should eat some types infrequently, if at all. This chart by EDF lists the most contaminated fish, and how much can safely be eaten each month (assuming no other contaminated fish is consumed). The advice is based on EPA guidance and the latest mercury and PCB data. See the green sections below for safer seafood options.

Got Mercury?

Eating seafood high in mercury is hazardous to your health, especially for women and children. The “Got Mercury?” calculator helps you make healthier seafood choices. Just enter your weight, the seafood type, the amount of seafood you will eat during a week, and click the calculator button. These calculations are based on EPA and FDA data (updated January 2006).

Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch

The Seafood Watch recommends which seafood to buy or avoid, helping consumers and businesses become advocates for ocean-friendly seafood. You can get their recommendations online, in printed pocket guides, or on your mobile devices.
